What are habits?
According to the English dictionary: habits are something that you do often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it.
So how do we form habits?
We usually form habits when our actions are attached to a trigger. For example:
When you wake you go to the bathroom, Trigger: Getting out of bed, Habit: using the bathroom.
When you get to work you go get a coffee, Trigger: Work, Habit: coffee.
When you get stressed you reach for the junk food, Trigger: Stress, Habit: Junk food.
So, triggers are followed by habits. We can better understand how a habit is formed by being conscious of our habits and what tends to trigger them.
In order to change habits you need to create positive feedback for habits you want to form.
• Start with making small changes to make sure you are going to have success. Change one thing at a time and achieve it!
• Start with habits you enjoy. Come a little out of your comfort zone, but not so far out that you are unable to keep consistency with the habit.
Have a plan, think about the habits you want, and create a trigger for a new habit. Simple!!
